Interview with A.B. Jolley concerning his experiences as a Dallas County agricultural agent in Dallas, Texas. Jolley discusses his father's farming and livestock operation in Tarrant County, Texas, his employment as a teacher in Tarrant, Collin, and Hood Counties, his experiences attending North Texas State Normal College in the early 1900s, disciplinary experiences as a teacher in public schools, his employment as an assistant county agricultural agent in Dallas in 1919, and his demonstration work with Dallas County youth in 4-H Clubs. He also talks about the origin and activities of the Farm Bureau in Texas, his appointment as Dallas County Agent in 1921, farmers' diversification of crops, the development of the cattle and dairy industry in Dallas County, judging demonstrations on town squares, grasshopper pest control, the advent of commercial fertilizer demonstrations in the 1920s, and the effects of the Depression on Dallas County farmers. Jolley comments on the diversification and specialization of crops, the local effects of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933, the benefits of a crop restriction program, the Resettlement Administration program, the involvement of the Extension Service with the Agricultural Adjustment program, the effects of World War II on Dallas County agriculture, and the reasons for his retirement as a Dallas County agent in 1953. Finally, Jolley speaks of his newspaper, radio, and television activities concerning agriculture, the involvement of county agents in politics, and the benefits of community fairs.
